Valparaíso, among the great cities of Chile, is undoubtedly the one with the most special characteristics, both due to its topographic, physical and urban aspects, as well as its history and traditions. From its origins it was defined in the complement of two factors that over time were determining its profile. These were, its urban character and port activity, so it can be said that since its birth it was structured around the duality of being jointly city - port.
In the Valparaíso area there are 36 beaches, of which only five are suitable for swimming: Las Torpederas, Caleta Abarca, Las Salinas, Los Lilenes and Playa Amarilla.
Of the remaining beaches, according to the report issued by the Valparaíso Port Captaincy, 19 are suitable only for sunbathing (sunny beaches): Quintay 3, Quintay 1, Laguna Verde 1, Carvallo, San Mateo, Portales, Acapulco, El Sol, Playa Blanca, Los Marineros Sur, Los Marineros Norte, Reñaca, Reñaca 1, Reñaca 2, Reñaca 3, Reñaca 4, Reñaca 5, Playa Negra and La Boca.
Meanwhile, 12 are found as dangerous beaches, prohibited for all use and are: Quintay playa chica, Quintay 2, Las Docas, Laguna Verde 3, Laguna Verde 2, Los Placeres (San Luis and Yolanda), Los Artistas, Casino , Arturo Prat, Cochoa Sur y Norte, Bahamas and Playa Naranja.
