The Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (German for Museum für Angewandte Kunst, abbreviated MAKK) is a museum for decorative arts in Cologne. The collections include jewelry, china, furniture, weapons, and architectural exhibits. Until 1987 it was called the Kunstgewerbemuseum.
In 1888 the city of Cologne decided to found a museum for applied arts. The core of the exhibition originally came from the collections of Ferdinand Franz Wallraf (1748–1824) and Matthias Joseph de Noël (1782–1849), and the exhibition was soon expanded to include foundations. The original location of the museum was a neo-Gothic building on Hansaring, which was built in 1900 and destroyed by bombs in 1943.
The simple Black Bernhard building made of red brick stands on the site of a former monastery, the shape of which is still shaped by the floor plan and the square courtyard. The late Gothic Minorite Church on the south side is still preserved. The inner courtyard wall on the north side is almost completely glazed and serves as a "shop window" for the museum. A low, modest anteroom leads to the very large entrance hall and the central staircase of the museum.
The museum has a large collection (over 100,000 objects) of European applied arts from the 10th century to the present day. This is arranged chronologically by epoch and includes furniture, decorative rugs, small sculptures, dinnerware, luxury items, and decorative items. For reasons of conservation, the textile collection is only shown in short-term special exhibitions.
The museum is particularly known for its collection of modern designs. An exhibition with design of the 20th century, which was created by the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein in 2008, extends over two floors of one of the wings. It offers a thematic and chronological display of furniture, lamps, telephones, televisions, cameras, radios and household items by designers such as Ray Eames, Dieter Rams, Frank Lloyd Wright, Philippe Starck, Ettore Sottsass and Joe Colombo. These are exhibited alongside visual works of art by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Victor Vasarely, Jesús Rafael Soto, Piet Mondrian and Günther Uecker to show the historical relationships between art and design.
Some solo exhibitions include:
A Woman of the Apocalypse by Tilman Riemenschneider (1495)
A tapestry, allegory of the Africa region (before 1742)
A writing cabinet with chinoiserie from the workshop of David Roentgen (1777–78)
Gerrit Rietveld: Rood-Blauwe Stoel (1918)
Piet Mondrian: Composition III (1920)
Marcel Breuer: Liège (1936)
Ettore Sottsass for Memphis: Carlton, Regal (1981)
Naoto Fukasawa: CD Player (1999)
The museum also hosts special exhibitions.
