The Plaza de Armas de Santiago was the main civic nucleus since the founding of the city by the Spanish.
During the Colony the square was a plain destined to popular activities such as festivities, appointment of authorities and public executions.
Later the proliferation of the informal market in the square, decentralized popular life with the creation of others on the outskirts of the city. Later, in the Bernardo O'Higgins government, commercial activity moved to the current Central Market.
In the middle of the 19th century, the process of embellishing the square with gardens and an odeon for music began, which lasted until the 20th century.
However, in 1999 the Plaza de Armas was remodeled due to the construction of line 5 of the Santiago Metro, which gives greater value to the city center
