Probably built under the reign of King João V, it was built to serve as a place of worship for the military of Lagos, belonging to the military administration. Damaged in the 1755 earthquake, it was recovered in 1769 by order of Hugo Beaty, commander of the Lagos Infantry Regiment.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the church, still under military administration, was in a state of preservation very pitiful, as infiltrations of water on the roof were damaging the painting of the vault, the choir leaders and the gilded carving. Due to financial problems, the repair of the building could not be carried out. In 1924, the Church was classified as a National Monument, by Decree No. 9/842. In 1929, it no longer belongs to the Ministry of War, and is now administered by the Ministry of Public Instruction. The repairs, supervised by Dr. José Formosinho, began in 1930. From this time, the Church became part of the Regional Museum of Lagos. In 1931, the section of Sacred Art of the Regional Museum of Lagos was installed in the sacristy of the Church.
Features
The Church is of Baroque traces, as can be seen from its main façade, containing a glass decorated with shells and a national shield with ramifications, Jesuit style. The exterior aspect of the Church is simple, with smooth stone walls; the main pediment is facing the west (General Alberto da Silveira street), encompassing the main entrance. The side façade, facing the Largo da Engromisso Marítimo (Silva Lopes Street), includes a perfect, large back arch that creates a vaulted porch.
It has two bell towers, of different dimensions. The largest south tower features a clock set in 1839.
The ship, with painted vaulted ceiling, is decorated with tiles and gilded carving. Along the side walls are 8 pictures, representing scenes of the life of Santo António de Lisboa, painted by Master José Joaquim Rasquinho de Loulé. The sacristy, which is accessed from the altar, is now a showroom of Sacred Art, where there are parraments, statuary and other religious articles.
The Igreja de Santo António is a religious building located in the parish of São Sebastião, in Lagos, in the district of Faro, in Portugal.
He currently provides religious services only once a year, on the day of his patron saint (June 13). The Church is an integral part of the Dr. José Formosinho Museum.
