Beautiful historical setting from where Martín de Estete began the outline of the city commissioned by the founder Diego de Almagro in December 1534. In its beginnings the square appeared vacant, without any monument, until in 1841 Don Pedro de Mandalengoitia Sanz de Zaráte donated a pool made of white stone that was built on his farm and work in Santa Cruz de Carabamba. In 1867 the pool was lit with eight davits with their respective lanterns and an iron fence was installed to protect it.



In the center is the Monument of La Libertad, sculpted by the German Edmundo Moeller and later assembled by Enrique Albretch. Inaugurated on July 4, 1929.

The monument consists of 3 bodies, each with a special meaning.



BODY I:

-Abundance, symbolized by the woman who holds a necklace in one hand and a bunch of grapes in the other.

-Science, represented by the old man with a young man holding an open book.

-El Comercio, whose symbol is the man with a toothed wheel under his legs, and -La Salud, expressed by the man carrying a sheaf of wheat, the lamb and the naked child.



BODY II:

-The Slavery is the man who has his hands on his neck.

-Action or the need for freedom, represented by the man who tries to break the chains.

-The Liberation, the man with his arms raised making a fist.

1) Proclamation of the Independence of Trujillo (December 29, 1820)

2) Battle of Junín (August 6, 1824)

3) Battle of Ayacucho (December 9, 1824)



BODY III:

-Youth, represented by the man who is standing on the globe taking a torch.
