The Goiânia Art Museum is a Brazilian museum located in Bosque dos Buritis, in the city of Goiânia, capital of the state of Goiás, at Rua 1 Setor Oeste.
The MAG - Art Museum of Goiânia was created by Municipal Law 4,188, of August 28, 1969, by the then mayor Íris Rezende Machado, and opened on October 20, 1970, under the administration of Mayor Manoel dos Reis. Prof. and visual artist Amaury Menezes was appointed as its first director.
Initially, the museum operated in the PaláO MAG - Art Museum of Goiânia building was created by Municipal Law 4,188, of August 28, 1969, by then Mayor Íris Rezende Machado and inaugurated on October 20, 1970, under Mayor Manoel of Kings. Prof. and artist Amaury Menezes was appointed as its first director. beginning of Culture, built in the center of Praça Honestino Guimarães (Praça Universitária), as part of the Plastic Arts Unit of the Department of Culture. Since 1981, its collection has been transferred to the Bosque dos Buritis building, its current address.
At MAG there are temporary and permanent exhibitions. Temporary exhibitions are limited-time exhibitions that do not normally belong to the museum's collection. Permanentes are those exhibitions assembled with the works that belong to the museum's collection. For this reason, these exhibitions are always available to the public, continuously disseminating our private collection. The MAG collection consists of more than 700 works of art, in the categories: painting, drawing, engraving, sculpture, object and popular art. Most of this collection is regionalist and, in a way, tells the history of art in Goiás.
It currently has two exhibition rooms named after two artists who were of great importance for the formation of MAG: Sala Amaury Menezes - First director of MAG - Designed for specific exhibitions of the MAG collection (long term). Sala Reinaldo Barbalho - Plastic artist and former director of MAG - Designed for exhibitions of the MAG collection and artists or proposing entities.
The Goiânia Museum of Art - MAG- has the task of collecting, preserving and disseminating works of art - paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and artistic objects.
MAG is a municipal museum, whose administration is under the responsibility of the Secretariat of Culture - SECULT.
Within its administrative constitution, MAG has a head and three technical sectors and a library: Technical Reserve - guards, describes, history and documents the works of the collection and organizes the exhibitions. Restoration - sanitizes, preserves and restores the works in the collection; and advises other similar institutions. Exchange and exhibitions - idealize exhibitions, carry out educational action projects, make contact with artists and the public and publicize the museum. Sectoral library that serves the technical sectors and the interested public.
MAG relies on AAMAG - Association of Friends of MAG -, a non-profit organization created to support and promote the development of MAG.
The museum is open from Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm.
