In the upper part of the city, the district of Hradčany seems to have stopped in the eighteenth century. The calm and tranquility are striking in the center of a modern metropolis. The modest houses of the craftsmen mix with beautiful palaces of the great aristocracy, attracted by the proximity of the district of the castle.
Like the Old Town, Malá Strana and the New Town, Hradčany was an independent city with its own statutes since its founding in the fourteenth century. This neighborhood developed slowly inside the medieval walls and soon Baroque, which still have visible vestiges. Initially occupied by artisans and court officials, the neighborhood began to see the arrival of the most important aristocratic families after the fire of 1541, but mainly during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This aristocracy built prestigious residences, which are now, in the great majority, the headquarters of some ministries and other institutions. Some of these palaces are open to visitors (Schwarzenberg palace, Sternberg palace, Martinic palace).
Visit the castle district
- The Hradčanské square, located at the main entrance of the castle, and some of them open to the public: episcopal palace, Sternberg palace, Martinic palace, Toscan palace, Schwarzenberg palace. This square also offers one of the best panoramic views of the city.
- Stroll along the small street of the "New World" (Nový Svět).
- Visit of the shrine of Our Lady of Loreto and the library of the Convent of Strahov, walk through Petřín park.
- Visit of National Gallery collections present in two of the magnificent palaces of Hradčanské Square: baroque art at the Schwarzenberg Palace, and European art from antiquity to the 18th century at the Sternberg Palace.
