Raiana fortress, in a dominant position on the so-called Castle Hill, defended that crossing point on the right bank of the mouth of the Guadiana river, fronting the Castle of Ayamonte on the opposite shore, today in Spain. Ex-libris of the village, is considered by the scholars as one of the most significant monuments of the Portuguese Middle Ages in the landscape of the region. It is integrated in the Natural Reserve of the Sapal de Castro Marim, being very appreciated the panoramic view on the river, the zone of the Sapal, the mountains of the Algarve, Spain, the salinas and the beaches of that coast.
At the moment it is classified like National Monument, it has been through the years to be the object of, works of recovery and of archaeological excavations, for whose finds an Archaeological Museum was created.
