It opened in 1981. It includes a collection of pieces that show the history of the American man. Pre-Columbian ceramics and textiles stand out.
The main feature of the original collection of this museum consists of pieces that were not chosen for scientific or anthropological reasons, not even encyclopedic. Their interest and homogeneity is that they were all chosen according to the eminently aesthetic criterion of the giver. From there derives the name of museum of "art", to distinguish it of anthropology, archeology or ethnography.
The Museum also has valuable ethnographic collections, including Mapuche and Aymara objects.
It has a library specialized in pre-Columbian art, archeology, anthropology and prehistory of America, with an approximate collection of 6,000 volumes of books, 500 titles of magazines and 1,900 reprints. Library material is only available to museum members.
