It was declared a National Monument in 1969.
The museum was created in 1911. It currently has representative samples of the different periods of Chile's history. The building is neoclassical with Tuscan elements.
The Museum has 18 permanent exhibition halls featuring over 1,600 collections, including archaeological pieces, furniture, musical instruments, paintings, weapons and crafts. It also has a special room to exhibit its numismatic collection and the Governor's Hall for temporary exhibitions and conferences.
