The National Theater opened its doors on April 13, 1846, during the commemorations of the 27th anniversary of D. Maria II (1819-1853), thus showing its name in the official designation. At the inauguration, was presented the historical drama in five acts The Magriço and the Twelve of England, original of Jacinto Aguiar de Loureiro.
In this theater many stars shone and many talents were revealed. Here they shone: Amélia Rey Colaço, Eunice Muñoz, Lurdes Norberto, Carmen Dolores, Ruy de Carvalho, Laura Soveral, Fernanda Alves, Anna Paula, Mariana Rey Monteiro, Catarina Avelar, João Perry, Fernanda Borsatti, Jacinto Ramos, Maria Emília Correia, Beatriz Batarda, Fernanda Lapa, Lia Gama, Glória de Matos, João Grosso, Luísa Cruz, João Lagarto, Manuela de Freitas, among many others.
