All the individually furnished rooms reflect the elegant atmosphere of the former baroque palace. A sauna with sun deck, a infrared cabin and a fitness room complete the range of facilities. The hotel is located in the very centre of town, next to the main square. Most sights, like the Uhrturm (clock tower), the Kunsthaus (House of Art), the Murinsel (island in the Mur River) and the congress centre of Graz are within walking distance. The building had been the largest inn within city limits since the 16th century. In the 18th century it grew into a "palais" with wonderfully designed rooms, suites and banquet halls.
In 1852 the building was taken over by Ferdinand Sonnhammer, who gradually change the "Palais" into an upper-class hotel, and gave it the name "Hotel Erzherzog Johann", after the well-liked Styrian archduke.
