It was built for the purpose of supplying water to the Convent of Christ in Tomar, and is about 6 km long.
Its construction began in 1593, in the reign of Filipe I of Portugal, under the direction of Filipe Terzio, (architect-mor of the kingdom) and was completed in 1614 by Pedro Fernando de Torres.
The aqueduct has 58 full-back arches, at its highest point, on 16 ogival arches supported on pillars. Its maximum height is 30 meters. At the ends it presents vaulted houses, which have in the center, a large sink for the decanting of the water.
Situated near Tomar, on the Vale do Peixe Ribeira, the Pegões Aqueduct is one of the largest and most imposing Portuguese aqueducts.
It has been classified by IPPAR as a National Monument since 1910.
